David: God’s Anointed
This week, Jodi Lenker joined us for our Father’s Day service. She started out with a book recommendation of The Road, The Rock, and the Rabbi, by Kathie Lee Gifford and Rabbi Jason Sobel. You can click here to order this book.
Throughout this morning’s message, Jodi read and referenced a lot of scripture:
1 Samuel 13
1 Samuel 16
1 Samuel 17-31
2 Samuel 5, 9, 11-12
Psalm 25
Psalm 41
Jodi’s lesson was about David - a man after God’s own heart. He was anointed and blessed by God.
Reflecting on the story of David and Goliath, David grabbed five stones. Five was important because numbers had meaning. Five meant power, strength, alertness…. it’s Hebrew letter “hey” also holds a pictographic meaning of spirit.
As David approached Goliath, he was confident. It didn't matter how much practice David had in slingshot throwing. He gave the battle to God. He wasn't worried about practice because God had it.
Anointed David prayed to God in everything, and God (quickly) answered his prayers.
Jodi reminded us that that even a man after God’s own heart will fail, sin, and fail again. With his intimate relationship with God the father David never fell far. He always felt God’s presence and repented of his sins and short comings. Even when he was being pursued by Saul. David would not harm him because of his reverence for God and knowledge that Saul was God’s anointed.
David sinned because he was human. After his sin, God punished him, but He never left him.
Through this intimate relationship with Father God, David ruled for 70 years.
